======Ju-88 Bombing Guide====== ======General====== This will be a quick start guide to get you bombing in the 88 as quickly as possible. The 88 is a very versatile bomber and this guide will cover ship skip bombing, glide bombing (no dive brakes), dive bombing (with dive brakes), and level bombing. This guide will cover what keys you will need to bind and will use pictures to give you a snapshot of what you will be seeing when you are bombing. ======Bomb Setup====== In game: For our examples we will use Weapon sets: Front: 18 X GP Bomb SC50, Grade II, Body type J. Rear: 10 X GP Bomb SC 50, Grade II, Body type J. Wing Bomb Rack: 4 X GP Bomb SC 250, Type 1, Body Type J. For Skip bombing, glide bombing, and dive bombing we will use: Bombs: 1/5 GP Bomb SC50, Grade II, Body Type J: C50 (25) low level: charging delay 14 sec. 2/5 GP Bomb, SC250, Type 1, Body Type J C50 (25) low level, charging delay 14 sec. For level bombing we will use the same bombs but change all to C50 (5) High Altitude (> 1 km), charging delay 0 sec. Bomb bays The 88 has 3 bomb bays (2 internal, 1 external). Default setting is to **all** bomb bays, or you can select **#1** (front), **#2** (rear) or** #3** (external). #1 can carry 10 or 18-50 kg, #2 can carry 10-50 kg, and #3 can carry 2 or 4-250 kg or 2-500 kg. ======Bomb distributor mode====== The 88 has 3 different modes of dropping bombs; single (default setting), series (which drops bombs according to the salvo quantity number covered next), or salvo (drops all bombs simultaneously) ======Bomb distributor salvo quantity====== This mode is activated when you are in series mode. The default setting is infinite, otherwise you can choose between 1 to 24 bombs. ======Bomb distributor delay====== This mode lets you set how far apart you want your bombs to hit on the ground when in series mode. The default setting is 10 m, decreasing to 5.5 m, 1 m, then 0 m, and up to 450 m apart. Once you go to zero meters, you cannot go back to 1 m, as it will go to 4.5, 9.0 m etc. As you can see, there are many different ways and combinations for dropping bombs Note: If using series, bombs will drop in order: #1 bomb bay, #2, and then #3; so even with 0m delay your bombs will spread out more than they would with salvo. ======Ship Skip bombing====== Ship skip bombing is pretty straight forward. Come in at wave height at a 90 degree angle to the ship, drop your bombs and let them skip right into the side of the ship. Easy setup: Carrying 28- 50 kg and 4-250 kg. Leave bomb bays set to all; set distributor mode to series; set bomb distributor to 2 bombs; and set distributor delay to 0 m. In this setup, you can drop 14 times before you would have to change to single mode to drop your 4-250 kg, giving you a total of 18 drops. Approach: Approach from wave height 90 degrees to a ship, arm your bombs and open bomb bay doors. Aim more for the stern of the ship to keep clear of rigging and drop bombs when see the line-up in the pic below, pull up and go right over the ship. Note: after each 50 kg drop, press and hold your open bomb bay doors as the doors will close on their own. Keys needed: Open/close bomb bay doors (not toggle); drop ordinance (bombs); toggle bombs armed; select previous bomb bay; select next bomb bay; previous bomb distributor mode; next bomb distributor mode; decrease bomb distributor salvo quantity; increase bomb distributor salvo quantity; decrease bomb distributor delay; increase bomb distributor delay. {{:88-1.jpg?200|}} ======Glide bombing====== Glide bombing is bombing without the use of dive brakes and can be done from altitude or down on the deck. Glide bombing is fairly accurate, but it will leave you a sitting duck for the AAA around the target. Keys needed: Same as above Diving from altitude: Here in this example the dive was started at 4000m and this pic shows the dive at 3600m. The target is tanks, so we need to keep the bombs close together. Arm bombs; open bomb bay doors; set for all, series; with 14 bombs selected with 0 m delay. {{:undefined:88-2.jpg?200|}} As you close on the target maintain the angle and speed. If you are consistent with speed and angle, your bombs will drop the same every time. This next pic shows the moment when the bombs are dropped. Maintain this angle for a second after you drop so you don’t sling shot some of your bombs past the target. {{:88-3.jpg?200|}} Even at this angle and speed the bombs drop fairly close together. {{:88-4.jpg?200|}} Bombing from a low angle: In this example, we’ll bomb from about 1000 m, were slower so we need to add a delay to spread out our bombs to cover the target. It is also a soft target, so the bombs being spread out will still do the job. Again 14-50 kg were dropped, bomb bay doors open, bombs armed, all, series, 14, with a 4.5 m delay. {{:88-5.jpg?200|}} Since we are slower, I use a later drop point (top of the aircraft frame) {{:88-6.jpg?200|}} This pic shows how the entire target was covered {{:88-7.jpg?200|}} ======Dive Bombing====== Dive bombing is bombing using the dive brakes at very steep angles. Dive bombing can give you very accurate bomb runs and used with salvo you can put 32 bombs into a very small area (almost one crater) Used with series and 0m spread with give you a little more coverage due to the bombs dropping by bomb bay order. If you add a small spread (4.5) you can start slinging your bombs past the target due to the pull-out. This accuracy comes at a price. The lower speed dive and being low and slow after the dive can leave you an easy target for fighters and AAA. The 88 acts like a stuka in that you can set a bomb drop and pull out altitude using increase/decrease sight altitude represented by a red line in the extra altimeter. If you set the altitude to zero, you can drop the bombs and pull out manually, otherwise at the set altitude your bombs will drop automatically and the plane with perform a pull-out. Keys needed: Same as above plus: toggle airbrake; decrease sight distance; increase sight distance; next manned position; previous manned position; decrease sight altitude; increase sight altitude; and lean to gun-sight. The same set-up as before; all; series; 14 bombs with 0 m spread; bombs armed and bomb bay doors open. Set the bombing altitude to 900m with the increase/decrease bomb sight altitude. The approach: In this example we’ll approach our target from 4200 m using the bombsight to line-up our target. Jump to the bombardier position and hit lean to gun-sight to bring up the bomb site. Line up the target so it is just to one side of the vertical line, and as you get closer just keep hitting decrease bombsight distance until you get to about 60 deg. {{:88-8.jpg?200|}} Now you can switch back to the pilot seat and pick up the target under your nose. {{:88-9.jpg?200|}} Keep flying until the target in visible in the floor about half way down the trench. {{:88-10.jpg?200|}} Now hit your dive brake and let the nose drop on its own, only when your vertical should you give it some back pressure to get you out of the negative g’s; shut-off auto-pilot if in use; switch super charger off; throttle to zero; pitch to full course; close water/oil rads. In the dive add left rudder to keep the slip-ball centered and try to use only small corrections to keep the plane on target. At the set altitude the plane will drop the bombs and begin the pull-out. As you can see here my target is lined-up but I’m a little out of trim. {{:88-11.jpg?200|}} Luckily it was still a good drop. {{:88-12.jpg?200|}} After the pull-out, close your dive brake; add throttle and pitch; and open the water/oil radiators. ======Level Bombing====== Level bombing is horizontal bombing using the bomb sight and bomb automation to drop the bombs from altitude. Done from a high enough altitude, the run will be safer from AAA but as the altitude increases, bombing accuracy decreases. Keys needed: Same as dive bombing with: decrease sight velocity; increase sight velocity; toggle bomb sight automation. Set up: In this example we will initially approach 500-800m above the bombing altitude since engaging mode 2 (22) will drop the altitude down to our desired height. (4000 m) Also for this run we will use: All; salvo; and 0 m spread with high alt bombs. Note: As of right now 250s and 500s drop fine with the salvo function, but if you try and drop them by themselves they will land way off target (long). We will be bombing at 4000 m at about 300 km/h indicated airspeed which is about 380 km/h true airspeed (what the bomb sight uses) Setting up the bomb sight: Set altitude using increase/decrease sight altitude and speed using increase/decrease sight velocity. This is the starting point: as we get closer to the target and enable bombing automation we will use increase/decrease velocity as needed to get the cross-hairs to stop moving. In this pic we are already in mode 2 (22) auto-pilot approaching at 4000 m lined up on the target with bombs armed and the bays opened. {{:88-13.jpg?200|}} As we approach, keep the cross-hairs on target by using left/right auto pilot adjustments for big movements, or change directional gyro settings for smaller adjustments. After each adjustment allow for the plane to settle so we don’t over correct our course. As we close, use the increase/decrease sight distance to keep the cross-hairs on target. At this point we are close enough to enable bomb sight automation. Try and get the cross-hairs to remain fixed where you want them on the target using small left/right adjustments (autopilot) and increase/decrease sight velocity. You can still use increase/decrease sight distance for faster up/down movements. {{:88-14.jpg?200|}} In this pic we are about to drop the bombs. Note that the aim point is at the top of the target as this seems to be the best spot at the moment. At this altitude and speed the bombs will drop at around 28 degrees. Once bombs are dropped shut-off bomb sight automation because if you have any more bombs the bombsight will drop again when the 2 arrows meet at the bottom of the sight (bug) {{:88-15.jpg?200|}} Jump into the ventral gun position and watch for your results. {{:88-16.jpg?200|}}
